Castleford Bridge, Castleford

Year of Completion 2008

by Paul Dale last modified Tue, 09 Mar 2010

Designed by McDowell Benedetti and constructed by Costain Ltd, the new 'S' shaped Castleford Bridge, is built over the River Aire.

The construction of the river piers was one of the most high risk activities within the project. The three piers had to be constructed within 8m of an existing fast flowing weir. A modular jack up barge was used to access the construction of the 1,800mm diameter mono piles that incorporated Macalloy stainless holding down bars. These were then used to place the precast concrete pilecap and bridge pier legs prior to completing the stressing of the bars.
