Millau Viaduct

Year of Completion 2004

by Paul Dale last modified Fri, 28 Mar 2008

The magnificent Viaduc du Millau opened for public travel in 2004, with Macalloy bars used in its construction.

Foster and Partners' Viaduc de Milleu is now the longest, highest cable-stayed bridge in the world. The £271 million Millau toll bridge was built by French construction firm Eiffage.  Situated 272m above the Tarn Valley, it stretches 2.5km across the Massif Central.

Approx 100ft of Macalloy 1030 post-tensioning bar was supplied for temporary use:

  • 32/50/75mm used to fix the temporary red steel piles to the floor
  • 32mm used to tie the glued concrete segments together within the toll booths.

All material was supplied via Macalloy's distributor - Arteon; who also carried out the specialist on-site stressing of the post-tensioning bars.

Architect - Fosters and Partners

Contractor - Eiffage
